[Updated in Nov 2017] The latest Samsung Internet browser comes with the QR code reading function. Therefore, you don’t need to install the Optical Reader as per the previous instructions (in below). To turn on the QR code reading function, open the Internet browser > Menu button > Extensions, then turn on QR code reader. After that, you can start decoding or scanning QR codes from the Internet browser by tapping Scan QR code from its menu.
Instructions to Optical Reader to read QR codes on your phone:
You will need to install a QR code reader app to use your phone’s camera to read/scan QR codes. There are many apps out there for scanning QR codes. If you prefer to use one that’s from Samsung, you can download Optical Reader.
To read QR codes using Optical Reader:
- Tap the Galaxy Essentials widget on your phone. Tip: Alternatively, you can get Optical Reader from the Galaxy Apps store.
- Find and download Optical Reader.
- Open Optical Reader and tap Mode.
- Select Scan QR code.
- Point your camera at the QR code and have it within the guidelines. The Optical Reader will recognize the QR code and provide the appropriate information or prompt you for necessary action.

Great news for those of you who use the Samsung Internet browser: the company has released an update with a bunch of useful features on board.
Among them is a new extension called CloseBy, which provides you with a notification containing info about your surroundings once you approach a Physical Web beacon. To give you an example of how it works, when you get to a bus stop enabled with the Physical Web beacon technology, CloseBy will provide you with a URL you can visit to get more info on bus routes and arrival times.
Samsung’s browser also has a built-in QR code reader that allows you to quickly scan a QR code when you need to. The feature is turned off by default, but you can enable it by opening up “Extensions” and then tapping on “Scan QR code.”
Another great feature is the Quick Menu button that floats on top of a page in the browser and can be moved around the screen. It gives you quick access to certain functionalities including opening new tabs, modifying text size, and sharing content with friends and family, among others.
